ADI Standards Check Training

Prepare for the lesson you will teach

A DVSA Standards Check assesses how you teach a pupil during a real driving lesson. Whether you already have a date or want to develop your skills before you are called, Instructor Development UK can help you prepare.
Our training focuses on understanding your pupil’s needs, managing risk, adapting the lesson and helping your pupil learn

What does the Standards Check involve?

A DVSA examiner observes you teaching one of your pupils for approximately 45 minutes. Your teaching is assessed across 17 competencies in three areas:

  • Lesson planning: agree a suitable goal and adapt the lesson to your pupil’s needs.
  • Risk management: share responsibility, give timely support and keep the lesson safe.
  • Teaching and learning strategies: choose effective methods, give useful feedback and encourage pupil reflection.

The examiner looks at how you teach throughout the lesson, including how you respond when your pupil’s needs or the situation on the road changes

We can help you work on:
  • Choosing a suitable pupil and lesson goal
  • Starting with clear goals and an agreement about risk
  • Adapting your plan when the pupil needs something different
  • Giving clear, timely instructions and feedback
  • Helping the pupil recognise and analyse problems
  • Ending with meaningful pupil reflection If you have a previous Standards Check report, we can use it to identify the areas where support would be most useful.

Work on your teaching in a practical lesson setting, with focused feedback and clear points to practise afterwards

FAQs

Do I need to bring a pupil to my DVSA Standards Check?

Yes. Your pupil can be a partly trained learner, a fully trained learner or a full licence holder. They cannot be an ADI or someone preparing for the ADI Part 3 test

DVSA allows a trainer or mentor to accompany you, but they cannot take part in the lesson

No. You book the DVSA check separately through GOV.UK after DVSA asks you to do so. The bookings on this page are for Instructor Development UK training.
